I have managed to get to two of the best wool festivals this year, the first was way back in April. Wonderwool Wales is such a good event, it gets bigger and better every year and this time I wasn't helping out on a stall so I had more time to look around over the weekend.<br />

I managed to catch up with the lovely Sarah and Elisabeth on the Get Weaving stand. Their ideas and patterns are so inspiring, I come away with my head buzzing with ideas of what to make every time I see them. I just need more time to get on and do them!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As you can see plenty of stuff! Yarn, a Saori warp, wavey beater and dyes. Lots to play with over the summer. The next show I visited was Woolfest, at Cockermouth in Cumbria which means I have to make a car journey north for over four hours. Unfortunately the lovely weather we had been having in the couple of weeks prior to the show didn't last and it became wetter and colder the further north I went. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Two more Saori warps, three lengths of hand dyed silk top and a selection of speciality fibres to try out - ramie, rose fibre and some bleached flax. I shall try to make it to Yarndale at the end of September but that will have to be as a day trip so a very early start!<br /><br />Rachel Berryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17168213832024835674noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7799208791401477060.post-77782900781587714082017-06-10T04:24:00.000-07:002017-06-10T04:24:13.704-07:00More Crochet...... and a few flowers!Well another month has been and gone, soon we shall be at midsummer and before we know it the evenings will be getting darker again. We have had a few nice, reasonably hottish days here where we could sit out and enjoy the garden but we don't seem to get the lovely warm evenings anymore. I have managed to finish off a couple of crochet projects lately but there are many more in the pipeline!<br />

I made this mandala cardigan for my son's girlfiend Abi who had a birthday at the beginning of May. It's a pattern by LillaBjorn Crochet in Scheepjes Whirl - a cotton/acrylic gradient yarn. I got it finished just in time. I have a different colourway to make one for myself soon.<br />

This next top I made from a Japanese crochet magazine in a cotton/acrylic yarn by Yeoman Yarns. All the Japanese patterns I have are in chart form so they are reasonably easy to follow and currently are my favourites. All the patterns are classics and worked in fine yarns which is so different from the clumsy looking patterns that are in magazines here in the U.K.<br />

This cardigan is from a pattern by Dora Ohrenstein in her book on top down crochet. I made it from the yarn used in the book but by the time I got it the yarn was discontinued and it took awhile to track some down on Ebay. Let's hope we get some better weather back soon so I get the chance to wear them!Before the stormy weather arrived my garden wasn't looking too bad, now it looks like a steam roller has been through it! Here are just a few snaps to share with you.<br />

The gardens were laid out in 1895 on what seems to have been a bare field site.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The gardens are full of specimen trees, rhododendrons and azaleas with a super tea room and plant sales area. Great for an afternoon outing.<br />

Across a field and a short walk away from the main garden you come to a lovely wooded area full of huge rhododendrons and masses of bluebells. Luckily the sun peeped out briefly and treated us to a magical sight under the trees.<br />

The wood is a mixture of oak,ash and hazel with areas of conifer plantation. But right at the far corner, on the top of the hill is an area of beech with a lovely patch of bluebells. They looked wonderful! The photos don't do them justice.<br />

Just as we were almost back to the car we came across a deer! Soon we were back at home having a lovely cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake!<br /><br />

Our broadband service has gone from bad to worse since the start of the new year and so we have gone to a satellite provider. And it's brilliant!!!!!!! So I can now resume my blogging without the frustration of continually having no signal.<br />
<br />
Well, what have I been up to recently. I have discovered a passion for crochet, something I never thought I would say, but after watching a Doris Chan dvd downloaded ages ago from Interweave Press I am well and truly hooked - excuse the pun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxyGag0Gq53h-EJiIcsOc0lBC0wHnSjHiGE3SfBdDkf9A3UZi1sBaf-7K3RQcLqFzfPfFZaSxTV8Rla_0yBa7LXhbztaoUgU8RTWWWX50PZrtb1kBM2rILN6BbOpm9MskK6HgPTRv6dOg/s1600/crochet+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxyGag0Gq53h-EJiIcsOc0lBC0wHnSjHiGE3SfBdDkf9A3UZi1sBaf-7K3RQcLqFzfPfFZaSxTV8Rla_0yBa7LXhbztaoUgU8RTWWWX50PZrtb1kBM2rILN6BbOpm9MskK6HgPTRv6dOg/s320/crochet+003.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
This is my first attempt at the pattern used in the dvd which I made from some commercial yarn that was in my stash intended for another project but which met the gauge needed for the jumper. And it has been my favourite to wear over the winter.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqBcW0KYF2XLGL6QjL21xSuXLVHxkGqssKXwxMQNldcXyRLWiNpCepshpAGb3heCbJzleQmqLMEaX4XROfMvbJnx_h71_yNK_mbgtlgphUYObiH0O98C3EQmU4ehzJDCOoZ9Prn85vKPk/s1600/crochet+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqBcW0KYF2XLGL6QjL21xSuXLVHxkGqssKXwxMQNldcXyRLWiNpCepshpAGb3heCbJzleQmqLMEaX4XROfMvbJnx_h71_yNK_mbgtlgphUYObiH0O98C3EQmU4ehzJDCOoZ9Prn85vKPk/s320/crochet+006.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I went mad on Amazon and bought a few of Doris Chan's books which resulted in this cardigan made from some of my handspun yarn.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAdBghR567UEkOfd_XCybNpdKCRx9ItBxwxm476uuDwdQ4b-9Ywv8M5Hfsg9Mn_KgLijVHrWVgko__KtesgpyZA8IWENbWevpveRtcVKfYyINZohXjqsrjZzpq5Vchy9EgM-zQpJxp_eQ/s1600/crochet+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAdBghR567UEkOfd_XCybNpdKCRx9ItBxwxm476uuDwdQ4b-9Ywv8M5Hfsg9Mn_KgLijVHrWVgko__KtesgpyZA8IWENbWevpveRtcVKfYyINZohXjqsrjZzpq5Vchy9EgM-zQpJxp_eQ/s320/crochet+005.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
This jacket is another of Doris Chan's designs and is again using some Lion Brand yarn I found in my stash that I completely forgot the reason for buying!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As I have become smitten with crochet I have joined a couple of Crochet Alongs (CAL) and this one is my first. It is called Hygge and is by <a href="http://www.haakmaarraak.nl/">Haak Maar Raak</a> and uses yarn by <a href="http://www.scheepjeswol.nl/">Scheepjes</a>. I'm taking part in a couple of other CALS and I'll blog about those soon.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here are a sample of some sqaures I have crocheted using my hand spun yarn in their natural colours. The pattern is Celtic Tiles by <a href="http://www.lillabjorncrochet.com/">Lilla Bjorn Crochet</a> and I hope to eventually make enough for a blanket.<br />

I'm still weaving and this is some cloth I wove to make some curtains for my mother's bathroom using a mixture of cotton and linen yarns. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEhajOdg6F4REEnrjuEgppu1R-M2CjY9rbTq0yxepqAKrKeNrAUlIKi4LOOlJ_dCVLTmeaK4XBIC3rwXz9ACm3-C7KAJEF6aEEyaiPpdbB51ka0MAa81j_OiGSxp9E6yi0fKAGnWXabKY/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEhajOdg6F4REEnrjuEgppu1R-M2CjY9rbTq0yxepqAKrKeNrAUlIKi4LOOlJ_dCVLTmeaK4XBIC3rwXz9ACm3-C7KAJEF6aEEyaiPpdbB51ka0MAa81j_OiGSxp9E6yi0fKAGnWXabKY/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is some fabric I wove to make a skirt. It is all hand spun and hand dyed by me and I plucked up courage to do the sewing last week in order to wear it to Wonderwool Wales.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Z1y_GZjGrToanPvac6uIEV5b7q2jo4EAx-KpOTrZAaa8ouzO0x-QnTuS5lH5npkvMYHAF2L4RBmj6UlksyTeYf5DzFpXeAFtFZrBEVG2AQsCJG65ME-Bjeqi0kqj6tb956tW8NvnKrA/s1600/079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Z1y_GZjGrToanPvac6uIEV5b7q2jo4EAx-KpOTrZAaa8ouzO0x-QnTuS5lH5npkvMYHAF2L4RBmj6UlksyTeYf5DzFpXeAFtFZrBEVG2AQsCJG65ME-Bjeqi0kqj6tb956tW8NvnKrA/s320/079.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
As you can see there is another version of the Doris Chan jumper in Cascade 220 yarn and it goes nicely with the skirt.<br />
<br />
There are lots more things to blog about but I'll leave it at that for the moment. Hope there is still somebody out there who wants to read my ramlings?<br />

Well it's been ages since I last wrote about anything. I have been doing fibre related things but I must say that my blogging mojo left me. I'm hoping that with the onset of the colder weather and the increase in activity in the woolroom may give me some inspiration. It didn't help that we have had a really bad internet service for the majority of the year as they are upgrading the broadband locally. Sadly we had to have our border collie Dan put to sleep in March as he was having too many severe epileptic seizures but we got a puppy to fill the gap! She is now 9 months old and is a joy to have.<br />

In fact I had decided to sell it and left it in my work room under a table. However I have watched a couple of classes over the internet which has changed my mind! Both of these are by <a href="http://jazzturtle.com/">Esther Rodgers</a>, one is a <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/">Craftsy</a> class and the other is an <a href="http://www.interweavestore.com/">Interweave DVD</a>. I am now hooked! My latest project uses an assortment of hand dyed locks from a range of fleeces. Some are longer and some are a bit coarser but all are the remnants of other projects or colours that I decided not to use at that time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX-mPlSE05cm_W0eEZ7QRUSF2HGFCFABhIQDuQjWAYaZVKD36gblPGOSVa0uGkIJzvIfEUmnhnumNdQfGM0U3fxTGymvZCxnmNFinDjDPwyn6TILa72sKFbv85AnXhYTicvoOGPZotaYc/s1600/January+2016+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX-mPlSE05cm_W0eEZ7QRUSF2HGFCFABhIQDuQjWAYaZVKD36gblPGOSVa0uGkIJzvIfEUmnhnumNdQfGM0U3fxTGymvZCxnmNFinDjDPwyn6TILa72sKFbv85AnXhYTicvoOGPZotaYc/s320/January+2016+003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
I split them in to locks, flicked them out a bit and blended them a couple of times on the board. Then I pulled off a roving as Esther demonstrated and I ended up with a huge ball of multi-coloured roving. I then spun a lofty singles yarn which I am using as a weft in my Saori weaving.<br />

I have lots of ideas for more colourways and I am currently blending some naturally dyed tops with added sparkly bits/silk and some alpaca. I am so glad to have found a use for my blending board as they are not cheap to buy and I can also find a use for all those odd bits of wool.</div>

As well as the usual gardening tasks which have built up over the summer on account of the miserable and rather wet weather, I have been to a couple of fibre shows. The first of these was Bristol Wool Fair and it was held in a different venue to their first show last year. No more cosy marquees but the usual cavernous auction sheds. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This year Helen added a demonstration/sales area for Ashford spinning and weaving equipment and David Herring came along to give his support and advice. There was also a couple of attractions outside for those visitors not so interested in wool! I really liked the display by some Viking reenactors who had set up a small living history area and did a few battle skirmishes in the arena.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then at the end of September we went to Yarndale held in the auction mart, Skipton which is on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. I could only stay for one day but I did manage to get a bit of shopping done and catch up with friends before the end of my show season. I wore my new pinafore and <a href="http://www.creativeweaving.co.uk/">Sarah from Get Weaving</a> gave it the thumbs up and took my photo which she has kindly let me post here.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The pinafore is very comfortable to wear and I'm already planning on making one, probably two, more! Many thanks yet again Sarah for your lovely patterns and it was great catching up with you and Elisabeth at the show.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, now I'm back home I have warped up one of my looms to weave a different pinafore pattern - more later- and I have begun to dye some different colours for another project I have in mind. </div>

I have a problem with any form of "dressmaking" as I had a "dragon" of a sewing teacher at school who has haunted me ever since! Mention zips/interfacing or any other sewing terminology and I will break into a cold sweat! But I can sew quite a decent quilt, which does involve using a sewing machine.......strange I know.<br />

<br />
I found a huge plastic box full of drumcarded batts of some Llanwenog fleece that I had done awhile ago and as I love using this type of fleece I decided to dye it whilst it was still in the batts. I used Landscape and Gaywool dyes choosing some nice bright blues and greens. To spin it I tore a strip off a couple of differently coloured batts and drafted them together. Some pieces were more towards the greens and some a bit more blue and the end result is quite nice I think. I now have quite a few skeins of a softly spun 2-ply yarn which I will use as the weft. I will also be trying this colourway and spinning technique in the future for a knitted jumper of cardigan as it is fun to do. As I sat spinning my mind was filling with loads of ideas for more weaving projects! The weather turned wet and windy for set-up day but by the second day of the show the weather was lovely and sunny. But we awoke on Sunday morning to very blustery weather with lashing rain, not nice for a long trip down the motorway. As usual there were lots of lovely sheep on display again, here is a sample.</div>

And the undoubted stars of the show were these Valais Blacknose sheep which are originally from the Valais region of Switzerland. This breed was introduced with stock imported from Switzerland a couple of years ago and I believe there are now over 400 of them in Britain. I have managed to buy a Valais fleece recently which I will post about sometime soon. Usually the alpacas get all the attention but this year it was these cuties, the pen was constantly surrounded by people and it took several visits before I could get in close enough. And there is always a stack of inspiration! Meet the two <a href="http://creativeweaving.wordpress.com/">"Get Weaving"</a> ladies Sarah and Elisabeth.<br />

Their range of clothing patterns is really fantastic and I am busy weaving fabric from my hand spun to make the dress that Sarah is wearing (on the left). I also have plans afoot to spin some Cotswold fleece that I am dyeing at the moment to make the weft yarn for a skirt from one of their patterns. I also found time to visit <a href="http://www.thesaorished.co.uk/">The Saori Shed</a> and meet Kim, the lady I bought my saori loom from. </div>

It is always nice to have the chance to chat with the visitors spreading the word about weaving and catching up with our customers who come to our stand and show us the projects they have completed using the yarn they have bought from us. My next show with Helen won't be until September but I shall have plenty of time, I hope, to finish weaving my fabric and maybe even get it sewn up!</div>

Watching the Le Mans 24hr race this weekend. Brilliant racing! Husband Graham and son Nick have been to Le Mans for the Classic racing and had a great time. We watch as much as we can over the day and, of course, I take advantage by doing lots of spinning. Keeping my fingers crossed that Porsche can win later today.</div>

As we are fast approaching the longest day/shortest night this is quite depressing! Most evenings when it isn't raining I try and get a walk with the dogs down our lane and sometimes I venture into the woods.<br />

Wonderwool was busy as always and it was lovely to catch up with old friends. We were very busy on the <a href="http://www.myfineweavingyarn.co.uk/">My Fine Weaving Yarn</a> stand as Helen had some new yarn ranges from Brassards of Canada which sold like the proverbial "hot cakes". I shall have to be quicker next time to try and bag some for myself.</div>

A very busy Saori weaving stand. I did manage to chat with the two ladies briefly and bought a couple of ready made warps but they were so busy I didn't want to keep them too long. There is definitely an increased interest in weaving this year. So many people visiting our stand started the conversation off with the words " I'm new to weaving" or "I'm only a beginner". It is really great to see that people are moving into weaving eventually. The next show is Woolfest!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been quite busy at home with a couple of dyeing/spinning projects, trying to work my way through the huge pile of fleeces in the hopes that this years crop will not overwhelm me! The first spinning project is to make a jumper for Graham and I dyed a Clun Forest fleece in Landscape Dyes Night which is a dark blue. I blended it with some Llanwenog which I dyed last year in a variety of lighter blues, mauve and a turquoise. This stopped the darker blue from looking too flat and gives a lovely heathered look to the yarn. Both fleeces have the same qualities and went together well.</div>

.... a pinafore dress from a pattern by <a href="http://www.creativeweaving.co.uk/">Get Weaving</a>. I met Sarah and Elisabeth at Wonderwool and got some brilliant advice on what to do with some fabric I had made. They had an example of this outfit there and I just have to try and make one myself. So I have dyed a stack of Kerry Hill fleece in a range of autumn colours and I shall blend them roughly together so that I get areas of solid colour and some where it is a mixture.</div>

Despite the sadness of the previous post I have been able to get some weaving done and also to welcome a new loom to the collection. Yes my new Saori WX60 loom has arrived!!!<br />
<br />

What a beauty! Such a simple 2 shaft loom yet it can help you weave such amazing cloth. I was weaving on it within half an hour of sliding it out of it's box as it only needed the warp to be attached to the back of the loom and to tie it on to the cloth beam. The built-in bobbin winder is fantastic, no need to get up from your seat when you need a new bobbin. I'm smitten.... it's the old drop spindle thing all over again I'm afraid. Can you hear me eating my words? I have already woven off the warp that came with the loom ( already threaded and in the reed I might add) and at the moment I have a navy blue cotton warp which I did myself from yarn in the stash. Waiting in the wings are 3 more ready made warps purchased from <a href="http://www.thesaorished.co.uk/">Kim at The Saori Shed</a>. This is what my first Saori loom woven warp looks like. The ends haven't been trimmed yet and I think I shall sew it into a summery top to wear with my linen trousers.</div>

<br />
It was a black cotton warp and I wove mostly with cotton and some cotton mixes with a few additions of novelty yarns. I'm really pleased with the way the fabric drapes so I must get cracking and sew it up before the weather breaks! The next thing to show you is the first bit of Saori-style weaving I did on my Louet Spring loom. The warp is black lambswool and the weft mostly wool with a bit of mohair including quite a bit of hand spun. I was originally going to make a skirt out of the cloth (to wear with long boots) but after draping it across the dressform I recently bought I'm thinking of wearing it as a shawl.<br />

It has a Scottish look about it.... you can almost hear the skirl of the pipes! And finally I wove a long length of fabric, again on the Spring, to make into a tunic-type top. The warp is a mixture of lambswool and a few ends of Jaggerspun Zephyr left over from scarf projects.</div>

A lot of the weft yarn is my hand spun taken straight from the spinning bobbin and used as a singles yarn. It seems to have worked alright and I really liked the mottled effect of the merino/silk mix top that I spun. I have started another warp on the Spring, which I'm hoping to get finished soon, in greens and yellows and I'm only using hand spun yarn for the weft this time.</div>

The yarn making the warp floats is some that I corespun from a mixture of merino tops, alpaca and glittery bits mentioned in a previous post. It's going along quite nicely and I would like to get it off the loom soon as I want to wear it to Wonderwool in a weeks time. Yes. It's showtime again!! Yippeeeee!</div>

After breaking a back leg it was discovered that Toby was seriously ill with bone cancer in his spine and therefore we had to have him put to sleep yesterday. He was always a cheerful little dog even at the end with a broken leg! But he was a bit of a rascal in his younger days...... I once had to chase him around the garden to try and retrieve a bobbin of hand spun alpaca from his clenched teeth! We all miss him already.</div>

The weather here at Deerfold has, on the whole, been wet and gloomy so the spring tidy up in the garden has been very sporadic to say the least. Most of the old dry growth from last season has been cleared away ready to burn and the snowdrops could eventually be seen in all their glory. This has given me extra time in my loom room before the gardening really needs to be done. Here is a glimpse of the creative chaos at the moment!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiWZrxhg9oPzrGGnIwOyAdYXLOoZCsU2SrZp-UQW2kpt5nv1LRbd5pjS5s8UXGpS16E4lcYUVkSvpqiZbEVKJtSixX0w1bjZC3HcSAi-70OTVoXDPHqNjxkOLxp8WQg5ct0EHIncwtKuk/s1600/February+spinning+etc+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiWZrxhg9oPzrGGnIwOyAdYXLOoZCsU2SrZp-UQW2kpt5nv1LRbd5pjS5s8UXGpS16E4lcYUVkSvpqiZbEVKJtSixX0w1bjZC3HcSAi-70OTVoXDPHqNjxkOLxp8WQg5ct0EHIncwtKuk/s1600/February+spinning+etc+012.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
With my recent discovery of Saori weaving I have at last found a use for spinning some of the novelty yarns - I won't call my efforts "art yarns"- and so I spent a few happy hours playing with bits of fibre hence the messy room. With a vague idea of weaving some fabric in a cheerful spring colour way I made lots of batts from leftover merino tops, bits of silk, some white alpaca and of course some sparkles!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is the start of the yellow pile and I also did pale greens and then did a few really dark blues for a change.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So far I have done quite a few bobbins of a really nice, soft core spun yarn which I'm hoping to use in weaving a shawl or wrap soon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have also been busy weaving. Last year I decided to make a tablecloth for our kitchen table but couldn't decide what design to do - dithering again. I did know that I wanted it to be in greens and blues to go with the blue Aga we have. After cutting my previous weaving project off the loom I started straight away making a warp from cotton, cottolin and other varieties of cotton and linen yarns mostly leftovers from projects or gleaned from Ebay all in greens and blues.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi86V_6EDvWU_K6gDDjl2rVSTo_jGjeW9N3inwqSzld0LAa2xm0JN5ED9bgmLUpBudOo-wQpuqFKvhjT_yFasAWgRKXuL-AwkPtEOvvEWQRFl6QGG3GSulnB9rlzxwOmJcvmZzxJioKIOg/s1600/February+spinning+etc+011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi86V_6EDvWU_K6gDDjl2rVSTo_jGjeW9N3inwqSzld0LAa2xm0JN5ED9bgmLUpBudOo-wQpuqFKvhjT_yFasAWgRKXuL-AwkPtEOvvEWQRFl6QGG3GSulnB9rlzxwOmJcvmZzxJioKIOg/s1600/February+spinning+etc+011.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here it is in progress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And finished!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzub3uT0GXYD9lfjbk_DzuGaYZWbWn4ZtUkFTMPUyL0t_XaxB7VMe3crTUGEfK_UtGyGYUoz6prQInrM-zH7Ghjuy3HVoznWtZ38PJrhRcj6w5O5hqXkfOFfsmRbcBKizTfooYfw5A-jQ/s1600/March+spinning+1+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzub3uT0GXYD9lfjbk_DzuGaYZWbWn4ZtUkFTMPUyL0t_XaxB7VMe3crTUGEfK_UtGyGYUoz6prQInrM-zH7Ghjuy3HVoznWtZ38PJrhRcj6w5O5hqXkfOFfsmRbcBKizTfooYfw5A-jQ/s1600/March+spinning+1+008.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm quite pleased with the end result and I have already got an idea for another one but maybe this time I won't weave such wide panels. The fabric has a lovely drape to it and would make a nice tunic top to go with my blue linen trousers this summer. My next warp is already on the loom and yesterday I heard from Kim at <a href="http://www.thesaorished.co.uk/">The Saori Shed</a> that my Saori loom has arrived and I'm hoping that it will be with me before too long!</div>

It is amazing how many balls of yarn I have collected over the years, some my own hand spun and some left over from knitting or weaving projects. I decided to heap them in to piles of four main colour groups and use that as a starting point and go from there. I had set my loom up with a black 18/2 wool warp sett at 20 epi and threaded in a Rosepath twill using four shafts. I wasn't thinking of a finished project but just wanted to play with colours and textures and create a sampler for future ideas. I began with the largest heap which was blues/purples/pinks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjujbaQUNfNOGgnuC0KI-hA-xqpzdp5-C3o3uSG8UCoy2IHjwTbunGAflhmqPOmFQyuPmtYc-4pTPFU980qm0lG5clG4EZdAe75hacqnCrmlu97pXaNxky-6FjTCGMpy1kL8W_QBuQqkxY/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjujbaQUNfNOGgnuC0KI-hA-xqpzdp5-C3o3uSG8UCoy2IHjwTbunGAflhmqPOmFQyuPmtYc-4pTPFU980qm0lG5clG4EZdAe75hacqnCrmlu97pXaNxky-6FjTCGMpy1kL8W_QBuQqkxY/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+003.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The yarns I used were a mixture of some hand dyed and hand spun yarns that I did over 20 years ago, some commercially spun mohair loop yarn, wool roving and fleece. I used the Rosepath Twill to help the thicker yarns show up and after washing it helped with the texture too. Then I moved on to the greens and yellows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF9G9QscIj35i6cl8gt4Cs3a0ThMn-E8glu4PlNuxPcJeTTPZFebh2eqJlE5fRu9UjkddUNco3D2O5yWp7wowt2Wrt42OpX0_D4Uih7Sd4FdpoB4eP6mYpBSjDS4y7lDxicn-vFiJVFTE/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF9G9QscIj35i6cl8gt4Cs3a0ThMn-E8glu4PlNuxPcJeTTPZFebh2eqJlE5fRu9UjkddUNco3D2O5yWp7wowt2Wrt42OpX0_D4Uih7Sd4FdpoB4eP6mYpBSjDS4y7lDxicn-vFiJVFTE/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+007.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I moved on to reds/oranges/gingers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvZGOA69hJqLGcDeKB_1e-ofr32HL8_KzLN3J34pwS0YyR1kxCo2qoJHqcv_dgiGscWSljLkAtYLMdl5G0Z1AwDa3XIQ6gUjycvUyQ0Ub099f1MM5pvjzGvBIrJPYlJaCTEJK1qyq50R4/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvZGOA69hJqLGcDeKB_1e-ofr32HL8_KzLN3J34pwS0YyR1kxCo2qoJHqcv_dgiGscWSljLkAtYLMdl5G0Z1AwDa3XIQ6gUjycvUyQ0Ub099f1MM5pvjzGvBIrJPYlJaCTEJK1qyq50R4/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+009.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally I tried natural greys and whites.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwXcfsSeIOQxzcNJtYNxxFnHEuxYfSgOXdEIRfjfDF4DWI-IwculRhJdinsY0zAd1cfKDACUnPekSZhrHwEnetZPTJCGhZi9KMlOGR5bJKl1cie5dFC3B8gmHgQRhB-bZSCe_cvGEttjE/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwXcfsSeIOQxzcNJtYNxxFnHEuxYfSgOXdEIRfjfDF4DWI-IwculRhJdinsY0zAd1cfKDACUnPekSZhrHwEnetZPTJCGhZi9KMlOGR5bJKl1cie5dFC3B8gmHgQRhB-bZSCe_cvGEttjE/s1600/Saori+weaving+2+008.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
During the weaving of these samplers I played around with the many weaving techniques suggested in the Saori book such as clasped weft with 2 and 3 colours, inlay, looping the yarn with a knitting pin or just pulling it out as well as using locks of fleece or snippets of yarn to add texture. After a fairly rigorous hand wash I was pleased to see that the locks of fleece had felted enough to stay in the cloth but not so much that they lost the fleecey look. I must say that I enjoyed the whole thing immensely. Two more Saori books have arrived in the post and I am now weaving some Saori cloth to make a skirt with. Having been very sceptical about this form of weaving before I can know understand why people do it......it's fun and liberating! My big fault is that I dither. The number of times I have gone into my workroom with ideas for projects but came away feeling frustrated that I couldn't decide what to do first and felt like putting all my stuff in a huge pile and burning it! Choices of what yarn, what pattern, what colour, have I got enough yarn etc. etc. etc. But with this form of weaving I just played and I think that is sometimes difficult to do especially when you have been brought up as a child not to waste anything. Everything you make has to "be" something. Why have I got a humungous pile of "stuff" if I never do anything with it? I also think that the Saori idea will help with my more traditional style of weaving and that I will not get too indecisive in future. We will have to see!</div>

We are already well into the new year and it has been ages since I felt inclined to blog. Not that there has been much to share....the usual pre-Christmas stuff after a few weeks of getting all the outside jobs done before the weather closed in. So far the winter has been mild and wet with more than the usual gales. However, last week we did get a day of snow ( all of 2 inches!) but I did get out and about and take some photos.<br />

By the next morning most of the snow near us had melted leaving only the distant hills covered in white.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have recently started an online Tapestry Weaving class with <a href="http://rebeccamezoff.blogspot.co.uk/">Rebecca Mezoff</a> . I have attempted tapestry weaving quite a few times over the years since I started spinning but I never got very far. I suspect this was due in part to the equipment as we were shown how using a simple wooden frame and basically string for warp! This is my sample so far.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm using a Mirrix tapestry loom borrowed from my friend Helen and I have eventually got the hang of it as it is quite fiddly to set up. I'm using 12/6 seine twine for warp as recommended by Rebecca and the weft yarn is from <a href="http://www.weaversbazaar.com/">Weavers Bazaar</a> although my aim ( if I like tapestry by the end of the course!) is to spin my own yarn and use that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The other new-to-me technique is Saori weaving. Now, don't get me wrong, I still love "traditional" weaving, I'm a big fan of twills and overshot and one day I WILL weave that overshot coverlet! But last year at Wonderwool Wales I saw a stand demonstrating the Saori style or freestyle weaving. I have my doubts that a lot of this type of weaving will not stand any use and I dread to think what it will look like if it ever goes near a washing machine! But I'm very attracted to the use of colour and texture and after quite a bit of dithering I have eventually bought the book!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It does have some great ideas to make your own clothes and the instructions for setting the loom up are very comprehensive, so if you were a new weaver and followed this book you would be set on the right track. I also go along with the philosophy behind the Saori technique but I still think some of the weaving looks a bit slap-dash or shoddy. So I have set up my loom with a black lambswool warp sett at 20 epi and threaded in a Rosepath Twill to play with yarns and colour and not to worry about patterns too much.</div>

I'm not thinking about what to make with the finished fabric as I just want to enjoy the weaving at the moment, but I would like to make some of my own clothes to wear to the fibre shows this year. To this end I purchased a couple of interesting books recently and it is my intention to use them as guides to sewing my own clothes from my hand woven fabric as I still break into a cold sweat at the idea of dressmaking after an unhappy time sewing at school. I only have to think of paper dress patterns and the vision of Mrs Hodby rises before my eyes!<br />

The first book ( on the left) is "Weave, Knit, Wear" by Judith Shangold. It's packed with ideas for clothes that can be woven on a Rigid Heddle loom but can also by used by multi-shaft weavers too. </div>

Humphrey has been staying with us since about September when he would sit with us in the garden. After a couple of days his owners (neighbours) called around to see if we had their cat. They took him back home three times during the week but Humphrey came back the next day. It appears that they had got a couple of new kittens and as one had got older he had taken a strong dislike to Humphrey causing him to leave home. He has settled in well with us as you can see, taking pride of place on the sofa, my side of the sofa where I sit at my spinning wheel I might add, and has even charmed the men of the house (and they are tough nuts to crack!) </div>

What a great time we had too! The weather was sunny and quite warm with only one heavy shower of rain on Saturday morning, but that didn't spoil things one little bit. We met some of our fellow stallholders we see at the others shows we do and met lots of new friends as well. <br />

Helen had an Ashford Sample It loom warped up and demonstrated weaving on it which attracted a lot of attention. The men (and one boy!) were fascinated by the mechanics of weaving whilst the ladies/girls liked the colours and sparkly bits! All we were keen to do was pass on the message to give weaving a try! </div>

I'm off on my travels again this weekend as I'm heading north into Yorkshire for the Reeth Rug Retreat. This a new thing for me especially as we are staying in a Youth Hostel. I'm sure I'll have lots to say in my next post. Until then....Happy Crafting.</div>

What a dark and cold month August was and it seemed much worse as we had such a lovely hot July. Let all those people who moaned about the heat keep quiet next time! But I digress. I have recently added another wonderful spindle to the ever increasing spindle collection - number 24 no less! After a lot of pondering I decided to treat myself to a Golding spindle...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc_TtvEDu_8NzwTcHi0Y_BgjzCHJAUCj-LzmSf3OUazdBDXo4FCDAGbZ_G6w6TCMBF19FAdMoEhj9bjNJMB4spbeFuKm5tgYcXP7ldMgffMBMvcy7PTwW3cV2uw16Kmd-PRbCM8laXHb4/s1600/Spindle+projects+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc_TtvEDu_8NzwTcHi0Y_BgjzCHJAUCj-LzmSf3OUazdBDXo4FCDAGbZ_G6w6TCMBF19FAdMoEhj9bjNJMB4spbeFuKm5tgYcXP7ldMgffMBMvcy7PTwW3cV2uw16Kmd-PRbCM8laXHb4/s1600/Spindle+projects+008.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is one of their 3" spindles with a lovely sheep decoration called Flock. It weighs slightly more than my other spindles and after a bit of a test spin I am going to do some sock yarn with it for starters. I'm sure there will be more Golding spindles added to the collection in the future. </div>

A couple of days ago I went on a day trip to West Wales - Mum coming along for the ride - to see a lady who keeps Llanwenog sheep. I discovered the delights of this particular breed a few years ago as the lady I bought some Polworth fleece from also kept Llanwenogs. Of course I had to get a couple of fleeces and after some sampling decided I needed some more before I could plan a suitable project. Alas the lady had sold her flock of Llanwenogs by the time I had got back in touch with her a year or so later. What a pity. But last week I was browsing Ebay over coffee and came across some Llanwenog fleece for sale in small lots. A quick email conversation later and a trip was planned to see some fleeces. Yippeee! Luckily we had good weather as we needed to cross the Welsh hills and head towards Lampeter and we wouldn't have been able to enjoy the lovely views in the rain. I did spot some fields around the village of Beulah where I am sure there were some Beulah Speckle Faced sheep grazing? Another breed I need to get some fleeces from in the future.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We got to Lampeter in time for some lunch and have a quick stroll around the town. We have never been to Lampeter before and we were both surprised by how many shops were there and what a cheerful place it seemed. It was even better after we came across a wonderful knitting shop called <a href="http://www.redappleyarn.co.uk/">Red Apple Yarn</a>. This is not your average knitting shop filled with bright, cheap acrylic yarn. The owners, Jude and Ceri, are keen crafters and are very selective with what they sell. I could have spent all day there hunting through all the little jars of buttons, stich markers and bag findings etc. I did have to buy something... some new sock pins, stitch markers, buttons and a skein of yarn. </div>

This is Yin a Tibetan Terrier who looks exactly like my dog Toby! Sadly his friend Yang is no longer with us and rather amazingly he was black like my dog Jack!! Spooky!!! After a lovely long chat over a cup of tea we had to make our way homewards over the hills but not before buying 2 fleeces. Unfortunately all the chatting meant we didn't get chance to see the sheep or the alpacas but next year I'm sure I will be going back for more! It was so nice to meet all these lovely people - and their dogs - and see such lovely countryside, which seemed a bit different to where we live, it felt like we had been on holiday for a week! I have a busy weekend ahead as I'm with Helen at <a href="http://www.bristolwoolfair.co.uk/">Bristol Wool Fair</a> selling yarn so I am off to pack my bags and head off later this afternoon. I will let you know what went on in my next post.</div>

I haven't been to this particular show before but I believe this was the third time for Helen. Friday was set-up day and we managed to do a pretty good display despite the heat and had it all sorted by late afternoon.<br />

This weekend was going to be special for me as I wasn't going to be helping on the stall all of the time......I was doing a couple of workshops. I must admit to being rather excited about this as the ladies in question were from America, Sara Lamb and Sarah Anderson, and I have been looking forward to this weekend since Helen booked them at last years show! Also attending Fibre East was Deb Robson and Abby Franquemont! I managed to visit their classrooms before the start on Saturday and get them to sign my copies of their books. I would have loved to take their classes but I couldn't be in four rooms at once! I was particularly excited to meet Deb Robson as her Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook is a constant reference for me when I am deciding what way to spin a given fleece and also what fleeces I would like to try next. I should have got someone to take a photo of me with her but it was a bit of a rush and I didn't want to get in the way.</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The first class I did was a full day with Sara Lamb on spinning to weave and she had most of the samples on show that she made for her book of the same name. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I came away with my head buzzing with all the ideas for projects that I could spin and weave this coming autumn/winter. Needless to say I got Sara to sign my copy of her book and you can probably tell from this photo how chuffed I was!</div>

On Sunday I did a morning workshop with Sarah Anderson on making a bubble crepe yarn. This is one of the many fancy yarns she has created for her book The Spinner's Book of Yarn Design. I could have spent a lot longer with Sarah as she had been doing other classes over the weekend on yarns such as spirals, coils and slubs, a morning wasn't really long enough but it was really fun!</div>

As you may have guessed I had my picture taken with Sarah too! I really had a great time in both the classes and would love to do more. "What no stash?" I hear you cry........don't be silly of course I bought something! Fortunately I managed to grab a few things before the classes started and I also sent Helen out with a shopping list. So I got a few bundles of dyed woollen blanket for rug hooking (more on this in a future post)......</div>

The spindle is by <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TurnedOnTheCut">Turned On The Cut</a> and is made from Sandalwood weighing 30g. Who could resist? All in all it was a brilliant weekend that whizzed by too quickly. At home the hay was cut and it has all been baled and now sits in the hay store ready for the winter, we just need to sell the surplus.</div>

Well........... that sort of happened! I did buy <em>all</em> the dye colours I had on my list and the 2 extra bobbins for my Matchless wheel ( the plastic ones). But I'm afraid I just had to buy some more Portland fleeces!<br />

I bought these lovely fleeces from Shaun on the <a href="http://www.harcourtrarebreeds.co.uk/">Harcourt Rare Breeds</a> stand. All are now washed and safely tucked up in my gigantic stash of fleeces! My willpower proved equally jelly-like when I realised that there would be a stand selling spindles from America. <a href="http://www.spindlers2.com/">Spindlers2</a> are Carol and Pete Leonard who have been lucky enough to go the Spin Off Autumn Retreats for a number of years - I do envy them. They import some lovely spindles and even though I had resolved not to buy any more I just had to buy one or two!</div>

Left to right the spindles are as follows : Supported spindle by Thomas Forrester, Ontario, Canada in Birch and Maple - I'm using it to spin some Cashmere top. A McKenna Lee (35g) in Red Mallee Burl and Bloodwood with a Mahogany shaft by Greensleeves Spindles. A Modular spindle by KCL Woods which has a lovely whorl made from a mixture of ebony, walnut and maple burl. I've used it to spin up some rolags I made on my blending board. Next to that is a square spindle by Spindlewood Co. from Oregon. This is made from Australian Laurel burl with a Walnut shaft (28g) and at the moment I'm spinning up some fine Jacob fleece which I've drum carded and kept the colours separate with the idea of knitting a lace scarf. Finally there is a Loki spindle (27g) by Greensleeves made from Australian Red Gum with a Red Oak shaft. I shall be going to a couple more shows where Spindlers2 will be selling......so watch this space as I'm sure to be paying them a visit!</div>

What a wonderful show but exhausting. As always there were plenty of lovely stalls to look at and lots of "like-minded" people soaking in the fibre fumes!<br />

You also get to meet some lovely people at the show. Our stall was next to <a href="http://www.threshingbarn.com/">The Threshing Barn</a> which has just become a UK agent for the <a href="http://www.strauchfiber.com/">Strauch Fiber Equipment Co.</a> I bought one of their double wide drum carders back in 2008 so imagine my delight to actually meet Otto and Joanne Strauch who had flown over from Virginia especially for Woolfest and were demonstrating their products. I know they were kept very busy and they both looked very tired at the close of the show. More about my purchases etc. in my next post.</div>
